Radiation oncology is a medical specialty which uses radiation as a highly effective modality in order to treat a wide spectrum of cancers in children and adults. Cyberknife Cancer Treatment

Cyberknife is a robotic radiosurgery system which is used for the treatment of cancerous and non cancerous tumors in the brain or in the base of the skull. It is used in certain cases to treat cancer of the liver, lungs, prostate and pancreas. CyberKnife offers a non invasive alternative to surgery. In CyberKnife scalpels are not used, neither is any cutting involved. CyberKnife delivers beams of high dose radiation to tumors. During the treatment, an image guidance software is used which will track the movement of the patient and tumor. It will also make adjustments and ensures patient comfort.

Before the treatment starts, a high resolution CT scan will be taken to locate the tumor, its shape and size. The data from the CT scan will be transferred digitally to the CyberKnife System for planning of the treatment.

Your radiation oncologist will then plan your treatment. He will match the radiation dose to the location of the tumor and will limit the amount of radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue.

After the treatment plan is made, the CyberKnife procedure will start. A comfortable plastic mask or a foam body cradle is positioned around your body so that you remain in a fixed position. Then the CyberKnife is made to move slowly around the area which has to be treated. A small linear accelerator will produce radiation beams which will be directed at the tumor with pin point accuracy by a robotic arm.
